Microbiology Add-On

Testing Algorithm
Delineates situations when tests are added to the initial order. This includes reflex and additional tests.

This order is intended only for use of Microbiology add-on testing that is not directly orderable in Epic. The request will be routed to the Microbiology laboratory for review to determine if the order can be fulfilled as requested. If the request is unable to be performed or the test is directly orderable, the add-on test will not be performed, and this will be communicated by posting an applicable comment within the add-on test result. Processed add-on tests will be resulted in the original orderable test or a separate test. To ensure the correct test is requested, provide the specimen collection date and time, specimen source, organism name (if an isolate), information about the request (susceptibility request or other request), indication, and contact information. Request information provided at order entry will be reported with the result, except for callback information. Callback name and number will be utilized if further clarification is needed to complete the request. Order status will be communicated within the add-on result. Certain requests may require review, approval, or modification prior to being processed. When additional clinicopathologic medical interpretive judgement is required to ensure optimal testing strategy and patient care, a Microbiology Clinical Consultation/Clinical Pathology Consultation may be reflexively added to this order. If a consult note is not requested, contact the Microbiology Director on-call.
