Plasma Na Cit

Specimen Required
Defines the optimal specimen required to perform the test and the preferred volume to complete testing

Patient Preparation: The patient should be in a resting state and the specimen collected in the morning to avoid diurnal variation of results.

Specimen Type: Citrated plasma

Collection Container/Tube: Light-blue top (sodium citrate)

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions: Draw blood in a light blue-top (Sodium citrate) tube(s). Centrifuge for 10 minutes and carefully remove 2/3 of the plasma using a plastic transfer pipette, being careful not to disturb cells. Deliver to a plastic transport tube, cap, and re-centrifuge for 10 minutes. Use a second plastic pipette to remove plasma, staying clear of the platelets at the bottom of the tube. Send 1 mL of platelet-poor plasma frozen in a plastic vial.

Note: Separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered.

Specimen Minimum Volume
Defines the amount of sample necessary to provide a clinically relevant result as determined by the Testing Laboratory

0.5 mL

Reject Due To
Identifies specimen types and conditions that may cause the specimen to be rejected

Thawing** Cold reject; Warm reject
Other Hemolysis; clotted specimen; specimen contaminated with heparin (ie, drawn with blood gases); specimens containing fibrin clots; specimen thawed

Specimen Stability Information
Provides a description of the temperatures required to transport a specimen to the performing laboratory, alternate acceptable temperatures are also included
